In the Philippines and Latin America, the Roman Catholic Church has spoken out in defense of human rights activists, environmental activists, indigenous rights activists and defenders of democracy who have "disappeared", been jailed or have been targeted by military and paramilitary forces.
This is in keeping with Jesus, a political prisoner of the Roman Empire who was tortured and killed for speaking out for the poor and marginalized.
