The Hunt for Environmental Activists
In the Philippines, Latin America and other parts of the world, environmental activists are getting harassed and killed for speaking out for the protection of the environment. Mining companies, agribusiness, and logging companies use state or paramilitary forces to harass environmental activists in order to get at the rich natural resources that in the land that environmental activists are trying to protect.
Many of these environmental activists are indigenous people who are trying to prevent the exploitation of their land by mining, oil, logging or hydropower developers.
In Brazil, powerful agricultural interests have attacked protectors of the Amazon forest after the election of the far Right President Jan Bolbonaro.
Mexico, Brazil and Colombia have seen the biggest increases in murdered activists.
