Donald Trump and Christian Nationalism

Here is a cartoon about the relationship between Donald Trump and Christian Nationalism.

Donald Trump draws a lot of his support from the Christian Nationalism movement, an extreme segment of many American Christian denominations that is hostile to the separation of Church and State and wants to impose an extreme right wing fundamentalist version of Christianity upon the wider American society.

I got the idea for this cartoon from a discussion in a church group that I attend. We talked about the documentary "God and Country" and our own concerns about how Christian Nationalism feeds into a growing religious intolerance and authoritarian sentiments in the U.S.

Jesus shunned political power.

Christian nationalists are willing to support a demagogue to get political power.

Christianity is at its best when it is in the margins of society helping the poor and marginalized.

Christianity tends to be at its worst when it has a lot of political power and it tries to impose itself on nonChristians and vulnerable minority communities. That when you get inquisitions, pogroms, witch hunts and other acts of religious intolerance.

I read a series of articles by Evangelical writer David French about his painful conflicts with the fundamentalists in his former church. I didn't go through exactly the same experience as French, but I had my own painful conflicts with former conservative Christian friends and understand French's sadness about the loss of his church and the loss of formerly close friends.
