Protecting the Free Press

In the Philippines and around the world, journalists who critically cover authoritarian governments are harassed, jailed or killed.

Governments often sue critical journalists and news organizations with false charges to tie them in court. Trolls attack journalists online and often accuse them of "fake news". Female journalists face misogynistic attacks and threats of rape.

In the Philippines, journalists are often red-tagged by security forces. Red tagging refers to when the military accuses critical journalists of being "communist insurgents", often with very little evidence to back up their accusation. When a journalist is harassed, they are often harassed, put in jail, or even killed.
