Fundamentalist Religion and Women's Rights

Whenever fundamentalist versions of any religion (whether it be fundamentalist Christian, fundamentalist Judaism, fundamentalist Hinduism or fundamentalist Islam) gains a lot of political influence, women's rights are threatened.

Many fundamentalist religions enforce segregation of women in societies where they have political power. They often limit a woman's economic opportunities and limit the professions in which women can work. In many ultra-conservative societies, only men are given the right to own property or to divorce.

In societies where ultra-conservative fundamentalist religions have much political power, women are often judged over by fundamentalist religious courts rather than secular courts in domestic abuse cases.

These fundamentalists severely restrict women's reproductive rights, outlawing abortions and severely limiting access to birth control.
