All Children Left Behind
A fair and just society cannot exist without ensuring that everyone is educated. All children—poor children, marginalized children, and children with disabilities—deserve a free basic education.
A few days ago, Trump and his regime signed an executive order to get rid of the Department of Education. He doesn’t have the legal power to do this, but he’s acting recklessly and might destroy everything before the courts can even respond. And, of course, his supporters in Congress won’t stop him.
For those who didn’t pay attention in civics class, only Congress has the power to control government spending. Despite the flaws in our education system, the main objectives of the Department of Education is to help provide more funding to low-income and poor school systems, support special education programs, make sure every child has the right to a free education, and manage student loans.
Trump is trying to destroy this important department so he can privatize education and make even more money for his billionaire friends and donors. The GOP supports school vouchers, which would give more power to charter schools the allow schools to pick and choose who they accept—going against the idea that every child should have a right to a basic education. They also want to use vouchers to let wealthy parents use public money for private and religious schools, which takes money away from public education.
This isn’t new—the Republican Party has wanted to get rid of the Department of Education for decades. This should be a wake-up call: they do not care about you.
