For the first time in over ten years, children are dying from measles, and our Secretary of Health and Human Services is acting like it’s not a big deal. He said that the kids in the hospital for measles are only there for quarantine, even though that’s not true. He also made it seem like it’s not a big deal, saying, “It’s not unusual; we have measles outbreaks every year.” The problem isn’t just that there are measles cases—it’s how the situation is being handled.
We have a measles vaccine that works so well it almost got rid of the disease completely. But now, we have a Secretary of Health, and we don’t really know what he’s going to do. In the past, he said the government exaggerates things like this. But during his confirmation hearing, he sounded more like a typical Secretary of Health—though with a hint of his usual vaccine skepticism.
If he went to Texas and told people that he believes everyone should get the measles vaccine, it could make a big difference—especially coming from someone who has been skeptical before. This vaccine is safe, and he knows it. After all, his own children are vaccinated.
