International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation – 6 February 2024.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) concerns all those procedures that involve the total or partial removal of the external female genital organs. This practice is not applied for medical purposes, but for cultural reasons. There are numerous complications, both short and long term, on the health of those who are subject to this custom. Among the worst, there is death.
Although FGM is recognized internationally as an extreme violation of the rights and integrity of women and girls, an estimated 68 million girls worldwide are at risk of suffering the practice before 2030.
