Record Number of Attacks Against Journalists in Brazilian Amazon in 2022
The year 2022 saw a record number of assaults against journalists in the state of Pará, located in the Brazilian Amazon, with a total of 21 cases of violence, surpassing 2015, which was considered the most violent year with 13 assaults. According to the I Report on Violence against Journalists and Press Freedom in Pará, most of the violence was related to politics and elections that took place last year. The increase in violence against journalists reflects the current political situation in Brazil, with increasing polarization and attacks on the press by political groups who disagree with news coverage. This situation is extremely concerning, as the role of the press is fundamental to democracy, ensuring freedom of expression and the right to information. Authorities must take effective measures to ensure the safety of journalists and punish those responsible for acts of violence. The article also discusses the case of the murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous activist Bruno Pereira in the Amazon, highlighting the importance of journalistic investigation, precision, and ethical values in news coverage.
