Stevan Filipovic ( Serbian Cyrillic: Стеван Филиповић; 27 January 1916 - 22 May 1942 ) - As the commander of a group of Yugoslav partisan fighters, was hanged by the Nazis at age 26 in Valjevo ( Serbia ) on May 22 1942. . The photograph of him, standing with his fists raised high, shot around the world and is hanging, in natural size, in the United Nations headquarters in New York, as a symbol of resistance to fascism. He shouted: “Death to fascism! Liberty to the people!”, before he hanged.
