With a number of European countries facing a severe crisis, and other European countries still deciding whether and how much support they should give, this might be a good time to remind ourselves exactly why and how the decision to unite Europe was made in the first place. Will these values prove enough to weather the storm, or is the structure we've built too flimsy to hold?
