Champion of the Masses
Despite the US Supreme Court reinstating part of Donald Trump's six-nation travel ban on Monday, Liberty's championing of the immigrant remains immortalised in a welcoming inscription on a bronze plaque at the base of the statue:
.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
.
-- From the poem "The New Colossus", Emma Lazarus (1849–1887)
