The Importance of Editorial Cartoons and the Freedom of the Press
As we're getting near the 10 year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo killings, political cartoonists play an important role in warning society of authoritarianism, religious extremism, corruption and human rights abuses.
They are an important and unique part of journalism that is under threat from declining newspaper readership, online disinformation, and harassment of authoritarian governments and religious extremists.
On January 7, 2015, the Paris offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo were the victim of a terrorist attack carried out by men who identified themselves as belonging to a branch of Al Qaeda. Twelve people were killed and many others were injured.
Here are some groups dedicated to protecting political cartoonists around the world who may be under threat.
