In the 1920s and 30s, some US lefties thought Stalin was just the bee’s knees; their fellow Americans called them “Commie dupes” and Lenin called them “useful idiots.” Now it’s the Republicans who think this century’s Stalin is just the cat’s pajamas, and right wingers are the full-bore Commie dupes, with no hint of irony or self-awareness.

What has the Master Dealmaker gotten in return for his preemptive capitulating? Just a bunch of bewildered former allies, and a bunch of bewildered enemy Russians who can’t believe their windfall.
