symbols and photographs

I always thought, wrongly, that the symbol of peace was inspired by the famous black and white photograph taken by the Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut. Nick creates the photograph-symbol of the Vietnam War that will lead to the final retreat of the US Army. The photojournalist managed to overcome the obstacle of the AP’s code of ethics, that is, the ban on the dissemination of nude photographs and the photograph was thus published all over the world, winning in 1972 the World Press Photo and the Pulitzer in 1973. The nine-year-old girl portrayed in the photo is Phan Thj Kim Phùc who will survive the seventeen surgeries. In fact, the symbol of peace was created by Gerald Holtom in 1958 who drew inspiration from the naval signals with the flags of the semaphoric alphabet. In this historical period, in which I feel suspended and at the mercy of the decisions that others will make and that will influence my life, I think back to that photograph.

Ho sempre pensato, sbagliando, che il simbolo della pace fosse stato ispirato dalla celebre fotografia, in bianco e nero, scattata dal fotografo vietnamita Nick Ut. Nick realizza la fotografia-simbolo della guerra del Vietnam che condurrà alla ritirata definitiva dell’esercito americano. Il fotoreporter riesce a superare l’ostacolo del codice etico dell’AP, cioè il divieto della diffusione di fotografie di nudo e la fotografia viene così pubblicata in tutto il mondo, vincendo nel 1972 il World Press Photo e il Pulitzer nel 1973. La bambina di nove anni ritratta nella foto è Phan Thj Kim Phùc che sopravviverà ai diciassette interventi chirurgici. In realtà il simbolo della pace fu creato da  Gerald Holtom nel 1958 che trasse ispirazione dai segnali navali con le bandierine dell'alfabeto semaforico. In questo periodo storico, in cui mi sento sospesa e in balia delle decisioni che altri prenderanno e che influenzeranno la mia vita, ripenso a quella fotografia.
