Requiem in C Sharp Minor

Big pharmaceutical companies as purveyors of death: addicting, maiming and killing off swathes of the human race all while reaping obscene annual profits. But I've been assured that they also "help people" so everything's fine.

You are correct, William. I am glad insulin was finally price-capped.

Add the Sackler family and Oxycontin to what Aleksandre said, but neither Oxycontin or insulin are "killing off swathes of the human race", and Oxycontin is typically a tablet, not an injection like the cartoon's piano keys. Also, in the US, insulin is now capped at $35 per month, and in most first-world countries, insulin is the equivalent of $12 per month or less. The US healthcare system is messed up, in part by the lobbying of "big pharma", but also by corrupt politicians, by for-profit hospitals, by for-profit insurance companies, and by a population that does not want socialized healthcare.

Although William does make a valid point, there are also a lot of big pharma companies that still exploit people. Eli Lilly and its obscene insulin prices come to mind.

"William's" critique brought to you by Pfizer.

Before modern drugs, people died of things that would be easily treatable now, Europe had plagues every few decades, and life expectancy was the mid 30's. Only a few years ago, we had a covid pandemic that was ended by vaccinations developed by pharmaceutical companies. With reference to the cartoons, BioNTech, the developer of Pfizer's covid vaccination, is expected to post quarterly loss of $0.99 per share in its upcoming report. Some pharmaceutical company executives make huge salaries, but pharmaceutical companies themselves don't make huge profits for their size, in comparison to technology companies, for example.
