The Only Way Out is Through the Chimney
"You have come not to a sanatorium but to a German concentration camp where the only way out is through the chimney," Karl Fritsch, the SS officer in charge of the prisoners at Auschwitz concentration camp declared to new arrivals not destined to go straight to the gas chambers.
Ironically, death became a form of resistance for inmates, who saw it as a victory to escape their Nazi captors, even if it meant "leaving through the chimney".
