In what may prove to be a disaster exceeding even Chernobyl in scale, radiation levels inside a tsunami-damaged reactor at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant have hit their highest readings since the plant suffered a triple meltdown nearly six years ago.

As officials prepare to dismantle the stricken facility evacuated locals have been told there is a chance they may never be able to return.
