Enforced Disappearances In The Philippines

At least 16 activists and community organizers have been abducted since President Ferdinand (Bongbong) Marcos Jr. became Philippine President in June 2022, according to the rights group Karapatan.

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's Executive Order (EO) 70 led to the creation of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (known by its initials NTF-ELCAC). The creation of NTF-ELCAC has led to an increase of red-tagging (labeling political opponents as "communist rebels" without evidence) against human rights defenders, political activists, lawyers, clergy, journalists, trade unionists and other targeted groups.

When someone is red-tagged, they are vulnerable to harassment, abduction, arrest, or murder.
